New Team Members

It’s time to welcome some outstanding new additions to the Grockit team.  We are excited to have the crew below on board.  They all add unique skills to the mix.  And best of all they are already doing great work.  Welcome to the team Jake, Thomas, Will and Alex!

Jake – Academic Director

jake bPrior to joining Grockit, Jake was a part-time Grockit GMAT tutor and full-time research assistant for antitrust lawsuits.  Back in the day he earned a degree from Tufts University in Quantitative Economics.  Jake once traveled around South America for 6 months, four of which were spent teaching English in a small Ecuadorian town.  About working at Grockit, he says, “I enjoy the freedom to be creative and see various peoples’ ideas implemented in a growing organization with a real product. When everyone is invested in the same goals, the product is better and we have a better time getting there. The sunshine, view of Bernal Heights, dogs and delicious lunches are not bad either.”

Thomas – Data Analysis Specialist

thomas

Thomas recently completed his Ph. D in Applied Math from the University of Maryland.  He has too many degrees to list.  But prior to Maryland he studied Computer Science at Harvard.  What Thomas likes about Grockit,  “I could go with the fact that we really are using quantitative analyses to drive decisions, or that I think we’re really providing an amazing platform for a variety of educational content…but I think what I like best is that I get to work with really incredible people, with a variety of different strengths.  I find myself constantly impressed by the people here.  And that makes this a great place to work.”

Will – Software Engineer

will

Will is a native of Britain who studied at the American School in London.  He was an engineer at Topspin before joining Grockit.  Will has a serious book habit and boasts a backlist of 40 books right now, ranging from Women, Fire, and Dangerous Things to Dictionary of the Khazars.   He joined our team at Grockit because he wanted “…to do good work for a company that benefits people in some way”.  He also likes “…that Grockit’s ethos and practices support sustainable, aware software development”.

Alex – Software Engineer

alex

Prior to Grockit, Alex worked at 2K Games in Novato, CA.  He graduated from Cal Poly with a Computer Engineering degree in 2004.  One of his favorite hobbies is to train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu so tread carefully around him.  Alex thinks “…working at Grockit is great, the group is very close knit, and the environment is fun. Very different from other jobs I’ve had in the software industry. The work atmosphere is relaxed, but very productive and collaborative.”

“After Near-Death Experience, Grockit And Its CEO Come Back Strong” by Erick Schonfeld

“The big feature change is that each of these modes is adaptive,” says Nivi. “So solo games adapt to you as a player, group games use an algorithm to figure out what group to put you in, and lessons will float up which teachers and lessons we recommend.”

Homework may never be the same again.

Many of the approaches that we draw on at Grockitadaptive web-based learning, study group formation, embedded assessment, computer support for collaborative learning, educational applications of data mining and social network analysis, learning in games, and the benefits of practice, feedback, spacing, teaching, discussing — are no longer exclusively discussed in academic journals and conference proceedings. Several of the researchers and practitioners in these areas have hit the blogosphere, where ideas are informally sketched, quickly shared, and freely accessed. Grockit Announces Real Time GRE Test Prep – Press Release

Grockit Announces Real-Time GRE Test Prep Through Online Social Learning Games. GRE Students Now Have Unlimited Access to Grockit’s Collaborative Online Games.

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 2, 2009 — Grockit (www.grockit.com), an online social learning game company, announced today the launch of its GRE online test prep and learning game services.  Grockit’s test prep program is an engaging and intelligent way to prepare for the GRE using online collaborative social game play that allows students to benefit from peer-to-peer learning, as well as practice and learn from experts. In addition to the GRE, Grockit also helps students prepare for the SAT, ACT and GMAT.

Beginning with an advanced diagnostic analysis, Grockit for the GRE helps students evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, then allows them to tailor a personalized study plan to eliminate weaknesses and augment strengths. As members of the Grockit learning community, students can choose from or combine three routes of study:

Alone: Students play a game that provides complete diagnostic analysis on the student’s strengths and weaknesses. Grockit then adapts to each individual, feeding questions and study material that optimizes a student’s study time.

With peers: Students practice with other students in live games and study groups. Peers serve as a primary learning resource and knowledge is reinforced when students teach each other what they know.

With experts: Students have access to experts on a range of topics where shared knowledge allows them to hone the areas where they need improvement. Grockit offers students unprecedented transparency and full view into experts’ scores, strengths and weaknesses.

“Collaboration and peer-to-peer learning are the foundations of our online test prep programs,” said Farb Nivi, founder and CEO of Grockit.  “Whether the GREs are being taken by a recent university graduate or an individual looking to expand their education or switch careers, social learning speaks to people of all ages by engaging the learner through an enjoyable study platform.”

Additional community and interactive features of Grockit include:

Points and Leaderboards: Grockit incorporates two point systems, which serve as reputation-like indicators: Experience Points (XP) and Grockit Points (GP). A player earns XP by answering questions correctly and GP by teaching other players in the games.

Performance Statistics: Students can track their performance across different skill areas. Detailed analytics provide students with their strengths and weakness, highlighting where they need to focus their study time.

Diagnostics, Challenges, and Badges: By answering questions in collaborative games, players work towards unlocking certain solo activities. Diagnostics include a fixed set of questions designed to generate an initial assessment of the student’s current ability level. Challenges can be unlocked through subsequent collaborative game-play and are designed to provide students with targeted practice. Students are awarded badges for various accomplishments; for example, when a user answers ten questions in a row correctly they earn the “Hot Streak” badge, while a user that studies with others often receives a “Team Player” badge.

IM/Chat: Students can chat in real-time and collaborate with other students keeping them more engaged.
