We can’t thank educators enough for the feedback and support and ongoing interest in using Learnist in schools. We look forward to more feedback!

New “Learning Types” on Learnist: ShowMe, Quizlet, MusicTheory.Net, Prezi and Google Art Project

When we launched Learnist back in May, users had (and still have) the option to embed YouTube and Vimeo videos, Google Docs, Wikipedia articles, SlideShare decks and more, directly into their Learnboards — with the goal of helping anyone learn anything, from anywhere. We call those external resources Learning Types, and we work hard to ensure they work well and display well on Learnist whether you’re using a computer, iPhone or iPad.

It feels like there is an endless supply of helpful free learning resources on the web and we seem to stumble across a new one daily. Our team wants to make sure that Learnist users truly have access to it all so we are constantly adding new Learning Types to Learnist.

Here’s a quick look at five new Learning Types we’re really excited about:

  • ShowMe is a free iPad app that lets you create video lessons using a whiteboard. Millions of people have created ShowMes, from chemistry to history to football strategy. Check out some examples of ShowMes on Learnist here.
  • Quizlet provides more than 13 million public ‘study sets’, which include various exercises like interactive flashcards, audio quizzes and more. Every Quizlet, from foreign language to test prep to art history are now available to add to Learnboards.
  • Musictheory.net helps people learn and teach music theory from scales to rhythm and meter for free. You can add customized exercises or suggested lessons to Learnist.
  • Prezi takes interactive slideshows to a new level, with a focus on zooming. Lots of folks are turning to Prezi to create presentations, including Chris Anderson, curator of TED. Add your own or any public prezi to your Learnboard to make it even more interactive!
  • Google Art Project helps people enjoy and learn about more than 30,000 works of art from sculpture to architecture to drawings and explore more than 150 collections from 40 countries, all in one place. Our favorite part? You can create your own collections and integrate them on Learnist.

Check out our Special Learning Types on Learnist Learnboard for more information on what Learning Types are available and how to use them. We’re excited to continue to add new Learning Types to Learnist and we’re always open to your suggestions. Have ideas? Please feel free to email feedback@learni.st with your thoughts.

“From the beginning, Learnist was designed with mobility in mind. The Retina displays of the iPhone and iPad make for an unparalleled learning experience, and the fact that so many millions of people have these devices with them all the time means just that many more opportunities for collaboration and creation,” says Grockit founder Farbood Nivi.

The ‘Learnist for (the) iPhone’ App makes it easy to use the high-resolution camera to capture images that you can instantly sequence into a how-to guide or lesson. New Developments at Grockit: Today We Introduce Learnist

We are exceptionally proud of the fact that we have helped over a million people around the world prepare for various tests. But, we’ve always wanted to have a relationship with Grockit users after they’re done. We feel strongly that social learning shouldn’t be a method or practice you use for months or a year. We believe that social learning should be the dominant instructional design for all of humanity. That’s a big idea. And we’re ready to prove it.

Learnist is a way for anyone to share what they know. Sounds simple, right? It isn’t.

The web is full of free content — blogs, books, feeds, music, videos, podcasts — that can be assembled quickly into lessons. Before Learnist, anyone seeking this information had to discover all of these resources by searching, surfing, watching, listening and keeping track of dozens of sites. Learning on the web meant that a person had to assemble all of the key resources themselves.

Before Learnist, a person didn’t have the ability to collect resources, share notes and explanations, and order or reorder web assets in a way that helps the next person make sense of it all. That’s what Learnist does. It makes sense of all of the world’s information that already exists online, for free.

With Learnist, you can quickly teach and learn from others with:

Expert vetting of content

Sequencing of material

Socializing around every piece of didactic material

This is how Learnist activities look in facebook

Here are some things we recommend you try at Learnist:

Board Creation.  It only takes a few seconds to create a board that helps someone learn. Simply cut and paste urls or use the handy browser plugin.

Collaboration. You can invite anyone to join a Learnist board. Know an expert? Invite them to join Learnist, and they’ll be a collaborator immediately.

It's easy to invite anyone to collaborate on a learning.

Suggest a Learning. Find a learn board that you’re interested in, and add to that board. If you know of another online resource, just recommend it by clicking the “recommend” button and pasting a URL.

Go ahead, show what you know!

Grockit Launches New App for Facebook Timeline

The New Year brings with it some pretty exciting news for Grockit. You’ve probably heard that Facebook just announced that you can now enhance your Facebook Timeline with Entertainment, News, Music, and other apps, letting you share more of your interests with friends. I’m pumped to say that Grockit is one of those applications. This means that if a user adds the Grockit app to their Facebook Timeline, they can now share their Grockit experiences within Timeline.

For today, the full list of Grockit activities that can be shared on your Timeline include:
● Total Questions Answered: To show off how much work you’ve done.
● Creating and joining a Study Room: So your friends can join and you can study together.
● Earning an Achievement: Showing off your accomplishments.
● Playing a Game: To show off how often you study.

We think it’s cool that Facebook is bringing various corners of the web into one place where people can share, interact, and discover a variety of content they wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to. Grockit’s app for Facebook Timeline makes it easier for you to study with your friends, and show the world the hard work you’ve put into learning.

Grockit CEO On The Education Gap, Technology, and the Economy

Grockit CEO, Roy Gilbert, connects the dots between the unemployment rate and education in America.   In his US News & World Report article, Roy discusses how STEM initiatives and engaging learning tools, like Grockit, will lead to  a generation of degree earning students and decrease unemployment in the United States.  Read the entire Article.

Here’s an excerpt:

“While the unemployment rate in the U.S. is at 9 percent, it is far lower for educated workers. Have a college degree? The rate is 4 percent. Have a professional degree like a JD, MBA, or STEM degree? Two percent unemployment, a rate so low economists say it is theoretically impossible.”

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Gets Behind Startup Weekend

The press announcement is below and over at edu.startupweekend.org. Huge thanks to Bill and Melinda for the support of Startup Weekend EDU.

Startup Weekend Receives $250,000 Grant from The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for EDU Events

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – November 2, 2011 – Startup Weekend, a non-profit organization, powered by the Kauffman Foundation, and Grockit, a social-learning Internet start-up, today announced that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation issued a grant in support of Startup Weekend EDU, a dedicated education (EDU) vertical within Startup Weekend that is designed to attract and assist the education community working to bring new solutions to the industry. With a grant of $250,000, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is backing educators, developers, designers, marketers, product managers, and startup enthusiasts, all of whom share a common goal – to bring new innovations to education.

“The Kauffman Foundation is excited to have the Gates Foundation support this important initiative that will help entrepreneurs with innovative education business solutions learn how to execute their ideas,” said Nick Seguin, manager of entrepreneurship at the Kauffman Foundation. “Startup Weekend EDU builds upon the Kauffman Foundation’s interest in teaching entrepreneurs how to build successful education ventures that have the potential to be some of the next great high-growth companies of the future.”
